Is there some link between Fibromyalgia and Diabetes?

Have you ever realized that the occurrence of fibromyalgia and diabetes is four times more often than you have ever imagined? Research has shown that there are chances of reduction of having fibromyalgia at some point in your lives when you keep a tight restraint on the blood sugar levels as a diabetic patient.

Around 15 to 18 percent of diabetic patients are also suffering from fibromyalgia, according to a study done in the 2003 journal Rheumatology International.

The relation between Diabetes and Fibromyalgia

In the study done in Rheumatology International, there was an interesting that about connection between these two. The connection seemed to be much stronger in the patients who had type 1 diabetes as compared to those who had type 2 diabetes.

The reason why this connection seems to be interesting is that type 1 diabetes seems to occur due to an autoimmune disease. The trigger is not known still. It is suggested that those who support that fibromyalgia is caused by autoimmunity, could be headed in the right direction due to the autoimmunity linked with type 1 diabetes and the fact that it is strongly connected with fibromyalgia around four times.

There is another interesting connection between these two, and that is controlling the blood sugar levels are directly linked to the possibility of developing fibromyalgia. There are high chances of having fibromyalgia if the hemoglobin A1C levels are high in a diabetic patient. The controlling of blood sugar levels is measured by hemoglobin A1C levels.

Another thing to note is that the severity of fibromyalgia symptoms increases with an increase in high blood sugar levels, in those individuals who have both disorders. Those people who have poor control of their blood sugar level tend to have increased symptoms like headaches, fatigue, disturbances in sleep, and a number of tender points.

This is so because the symptoms connected directly with fibromyalgia are actually imitated by diabetes. People, especially women, who are having diabetes should need to be aware of the fact that fibromyalgia can actually occur four times more in people with diabetes.
